Superstar Rajinikanth recently shared a fresh update about Thalaivar 173 (that's the working title for now) during a quick chat with the press outside his house for the Pongal festival. Here is the lowdown on everything we know so far.
The Big Update from Thalaiva
While greeting fans at his Poes Garden residence, Rajini confirmed that the movie is going to be a "proper commercial entertainer." He also dropped the filming schedule—it’s officially set to go on floors in April 2026.
Here’s the interesting bit: this project has had a bit of a musical chairs situation with the directors. Originally, Sundar C (the guy who did Arunachalam) was supposed to direct it, but he stepped down back in November due to some "unavoidable reasons." Now, Cibi Chakravarthy is taking the lead. You might know him from that fun Sivakarthikeyan movie Don.

Why This is a Big Deal

The Rumored Plot: There are strong rumors going around that the movie might be inspired by the English film The Outfit (2022). If that's true, we might see Rajini as a sophisticated, sharp-witted character—maybe a tailor or something—dealing with mobsters.
The Tagline: The first poster had a cool tagline: "Every Family Has A Hero." It definitely hints at some heavy family emotions mixed with the usual Rajini action.
Note: Cibi is a huge fanboy of Rajini. He even posted on Twitter (or X, whatever we call it now) about how his dream of directing his idol is finally coming true. It’s kinda sweet, actually.
What Else is Thalaivar Up To?
Before he gets into Thalaivar 173, Rajini has Jailer 2 coming out! That one is directed by Nelson and is slated for June 12, 2026. I heard Vijay Sethupathi might be doing a cameo in that one too, which is just crazy.
Anyway, it looks like 2026 and 2027 are going to be massive years for the Superstar. I'm honestly just happy to see him and Kamal Haasan collaborating again, even if Kamal is "only" the producer (though everyone is secretly hoping for a cameo, right?).
