So, everyone is buzzing about the casting of Border 2, and honestly, its about time we got a sequel to that legendary 1997 movie. One of the biggest talking points has been Varun Dhawan joining the cast as Subedar Joginder Singh—wait, sorry, I mean Param Vir Hoshiyar Singh. (Too many war movies lately, lol).

Heres the tea on why Sunny Deol and director Anurag Singh (and JP Dutta, who is producing) decided to go with Varun for such a heavy role:
1. He has that "Mass" Appeal but with Acting Chops
Let’s be real, Varun is one of the few actors from the younger generation who can actually pull people into theaters in small towns. While we usually see him doing goofy comedies or dancing, he proved in Badlapur and October that he can be super intense. To play a real-life hero like Hoshiyar Singh—who won the Param Vir Chakra during the 1971 war—you need someone who can look tough but also show a lot of heart.
2. Physical Transformation
The makers needed someone who could look the part of a rugged soldier. Varun is known for being a fitness freak, so they knew he wouldn’t complain about the intense boot camp training. I read somewhere that he’s been working out twice a day to get that "army" build. Apparently, he has to look believable standing next to Sunny Deol, which is... honestly a tall task for anyone because Sunny Paji is a beast even at his age.
3. The "Gen Z" Connection
The original Border is a classic for our parents, but for the new movie to be a blockbuster, they need the younger crowd. Varun has a massive following on Instagram and with kids. By casting him, the producers ensure that the movie feels "fresh" and not just like a nostalgia trip.
4. His Chemistry with the Cast
With Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty, Suniel Shetty's son also in the mix, Varun fits right in the middle as a senior-ish actor who can lead the younger pack. It’s also a bit of a full-circle moment because his dad, David Dhawan, has worked with the senior actors of that era so much.
5. Hoshiyar Singh’s Real Personality
Major Hoshiyar Singh was known for being incredibly brave but also quite young and charismatic during the Battle of Basantar. The directors felt Varun’s natural energy matched the "vibe" of the real-life hero. They didn't want someone too old or too "stoney-faced."
I’m still a bit nervous if he can match the iconic energy of the first film (the songs alone were 10/10), but seeing how dedicated Varun is, it might actually work. What do you think? Is he a good choice or should they have gone with someone like Vicky Kaushal? (Though Vicky is basically in every war movie now, haha)
